21 Books in ’21

Happy New Year, friends! We did it. We made it through the year 2020, hopefully mostly unscathed. I won’t wax poetic about new year, new me or anything, since that kind of thinking seems counterproductive and also, I never stick my resolutions out. I can barely get through my planned TBR in any given month!

However, 2021 is looking like an amazing year for sapphic book releases. Without any further ado, here is my list of twenty-one books I’m excited for in 2021 (in no particular order):

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston
Releases June 1, 2021
New Adult Romance
Red, White & Royal Blue is my all-time favorite book, plain and simple. It’s the perfect rom-com, really. Suffice it to say that I’ve been desperate for McQuiston’s sophomore novel about a cynical 23-year-old and her time-traveling punk crush since it was announced.

The Scratch Daughters by Hannah Abigail Clarke
Releases September 14, 2021
YA Fantasy
Clarke’s debut, The Scapegracers, was one of the best books I read this in 2020. It was funny, poignant, and had a great cast of characters. I’ve been desperate to see what happens to Sideways Pike and her coven ever since reading the first installment of this trilogy.

A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee
Releases August 3, 2021
YA Fantasy
Sapphic dark academia. Need I say more?

Rise to the Sun by Leah Johnson
Releases July 6, 2021
YA Contemporary Romance
Leah Johnson’s first book, You Should See Me in a Crown, brought me to literal tears for so many reasons. Her next novel about two girls at a music festival will no doubt do the same.

Hani and Ishu’s Guide to Fake Dating by Adiba Jaigirdar
Releases May 25, 2021
YA Contemporary Romance
Bengali enemies-to-lovers fake dating? Sign. Me. Up. I couldn’t put down The Henna Wars, Jaigirdar’s 2020 release about Nishat and Flávia’s rivalry and romance during a school business project. I can’t wait to get to know Hani and Ishu this spring.

The Dead and the Dark by Courtney Gould
Releases August 3, 2021
YA Fantasy
“Something is wrong in Snakebite, Oregon.” Gould’s 2021 debut novel promises ghost hunting, ghosts, and sapphic enemies to lovers.

This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron
Releases July 15, 2021
YA Fantasy
Yet another 2021 release by an author whose work I adored this past year, I’m beyond excited to read the first book in a series about magic, plants, secrets, and old houses in rural New York. Also, just look at this cover.

Afterlove by Tanya Byrne
Releases June 10, 2021
YA Fantasy
“The lesbian love story you’ve been dying to read.” Well, okay, I know I’m going to take this book’s word. Ash Persaud is determined to see her first love again, but Poppy is dead and Ash is set to become a reaper in the afterlife.

The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri
Releases June 10, 2021
Adult Fantasy
This is the first installment in “a new trilogy set in a world inspired by the history and epics of India, in which a captive princess and a maidservant in possession of forbidden magic become unlikely allies on a dark journey to save their empire from the princess’s traitor brother.” Yes, please.

Not My Problem by Ciara Smyth
Releases May 25, 2021
YA Contemporary Romance
A story about “a semester of traded favors, ill-advised hijinks, and an unexpected chance at love,” this sounds like a perfect shenanigans-filled YA rom-com.

Some Girls Do by Jennifer Dugan
Releases May 18, 2021
YA Contemporary Romance
“An openly gay track star falls for a closeted, bisexual teen beauty queen with a penchant for fixing up old cars.” LOOK AT THAT COVER AND THE PREMISE.

She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen

Another YA sapphic sports rom-com, the description for She Drives Me Crazy includes: “Hijinks, heartbreak, and gay fake-dating scheme for the ages” and enemies-to-lovers! Ahhhh!

Piper Kitts is trying to get over her ex-girlfriend while she spends the summer with her grandmother in North Carolina; Kat Pearson suspects she might like girls but has been too afraid to test her theory. When Piper hires Kat for driving lessons, they’ll both have to grapple with their own hearts.

In the Ravenous Dark by A.M. Strickland
Releases May 18, 2021
YA Fantasy
“A pansexual bloodmage reluctantly teams up with an undead spirit to start a rebellion among the living and the dead.” I think the reasons I’m excited for this release are pretty self-explanatory.

Love and Other Natural Disasters by Misa Sugiura
Releases June 8, 2021
YA Contemporary Romance
Nozomi Nagai winds up tangled in a web of lies and feelings when she gets involved in a fake-dating scheme with the girl of her dreams. Asian sapphics!!!

A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson
Releases January 31, 2021
Adult Fantasy/Horror
Described as a “lyrical and dreamy reimagining of Dracula’s brides,” this story follows Constanta as she has to choose between her freedom and her vampire husband whom she loves. The author tweeted something about sapphic yearning at the opera, so I am 100% here for it. I cannot wait for this gorgeous Gothic beauty!

The Lost Girls by Sonia Hartl
Releases September 7, 2021
YA Fantasy
When Holly sets out to kill the vampire who turned her at just sixteen-years-old in 1987 with a band of his other victims, but their plan grows complicated as Holly begins to fall for the human girl they’re trying to protect. Sapphic vampires!!!

To Break a Covenant by Alison Ames
Releases June 1, 2021
YA Horror
The ex-mining town of New Basin is rumored to be haunted. When strange things start happening to the people of the town, Nina, Clem, Lisey, and Piper decide to go into the mine and solve the mystery for themselves. I don’t know about y’all, but I see “ghosts” and “sapphic” and have immediate tunnel vision.

There you have it: 21 sapphic releases I’m excited for in 2021. I realize a lot of the aforementioned titles are YA, so if you have any adult recs to check out, please comment here to let me and others know! What do you hope to read this year?
