“What am I? It’s one summer. You can’t change into a different person over a summer.”

Alright, this is going to be a short one. I wanted to like this book, I really did. The vibes were off from the beginning, though (at least for me).

Lara's had eyes for exactly one person throughout her three years of high school: Chase Harding. He's tall, strong, sweet, a football star, and frankly, stupid hot. Oh, and he's talking to her now. On purpose and everything. Maybe...flirting, even? No, wait, he's definitely flirting, which is pretty much the sum of everything Lara's wanted out of life.

Except she’s haunted by a memory. A memory of a confusing, romantic, strangely perfect summer spent with a girl named Jasmine. A memory that becomes a confusing, disorienting present when Jasmine herself walks through the front doors of the school to see Lara and Chase chatting it up in front of the lockers.

Lara has everything she ever wanted: a tight-knit group of friends, a job that borders on cool, and Chase, the boy of her literal dreams. But if she's finally got the guy, why can't she stop thinking about the girl?

The good:

  • Funny
  • Well-written
  • Bisexual rep
  • Sex-positive plotlines
  • Major summer vibes

The not-so-good:

  • It seems like sex is one of the biggest focuses and I don’t know about how it’s portrayed. It’s not cast in a negative light, but the characters are a little… sex-obsessed?
  • I just couldn’t get myself to like any of the characters, who were all pretty privileged and popular.
  • Love triangle (I know, I got myself into that one)
  • The nonlinear storytelling didn’t work for me personally
  • This may just be me, but I could tell it was a story told by an adult trying to sound like a teenager… if that makes sense

I think a lot of people will truly enjoy Cool for the Summer!! It was by no means a bad book and I don’t want to steer anyone away if it sounds like your jam. It just wasn’t the right book for me, personally, but I’m not the intended audience so maybe that’s okay.
